Alun Stedman, one of our coaches at Aberdyfi Rowing Club and also coach for some members of GB coastal rowing team training to compete in the World Championships in Portugal in September, said,
“ I was introduced to Tom by chance outside Aberdyfi Rowing Club boatshed when he and his partner were visiting the area. I invited them both to have a go at coastal rowing - which Tom had never done before, although he had previously done sculling in river boats.”
“ Tom was delighted at my invitation and thoroughly enjoyed rowing on the Dyfi estuary – a different experience for him. We had a great row and as a coach it was very interesting for me to discuss techniques and training methods with him. After his row Tom was extremely keen to come back the next day to row again – this time with ARC member Tim Chesworth.”
“Tim is in training now to qualify for the British team in order to be part of the World Championships which will be held in Wales next year in Saundersfoot, so a very good opportunity for Tim to pick up a few tips from such an experienced Olympian rower.”
“ It was great to be rowing alongside Tom”, said Tim. “ He is a really friendly guy and he taught me so much technically that was very helpful. It was also very motivating to chat to him about his training – as a full time GB rower he trains three times a day and he gave me an insight into what is required to row at such a high standard”
“ He absolutely loved being on the estuary – the conditions were calm , which was good, but Tom said he would like to come back and row when the conditions are more challenging! I think he was hoping to have a go at surfing a few waves! “
“ It was really inspirational meeting Tom – he gave me great advice and was very encouraging. It was exciting for me at this stage of my training in aiming to qualify for the British team, to have such an unique opportunity to get tips from ‘the best’ ”.
Alun added “ Tom is keen to row here again on the Dyfi so we hope he will get an opportunity to come back sometime and meet other members of our club. Meetings like this are a great way for members to exchange experiences with the possibility of trying out rowing at different clubs”
“I hope others will be encouraged to come down to Aberdyfi Rowing Club to learn how to scull and join Tim in his training on the Dyfi Estuary”
