Aberdyfi Rowing Club is very pleased with the purchase of a new boat for the club- a Teifi Skiff named ‘Flying Fish’.
This boat has been bought with the help of a legacy of £500 from former ARC by coupons USA
member Ron Franks, who sadly died in June, 2013.
Club Chairman Mike Rogers said, “ Ron was a stalwart member of our club who is greatly missed – as a lot of us know he was very involved with our club, was loyal, popular and reliable and acted as Chairman and also Bosun during his time with us."
" We are very fortunate that Ron left us a legacy in his will. He wanted this legacy to go towards something in particular that would be encouraging for the youth of our club.”
“ The committee spent quite a long time deciding on the best use of Ron’s legacy, but feel that we have now chosen something that Ron would be very happy with.”
" I'd like to thank Ian Andrews for his research into finding a suitable boat and for his help in collecting the boat from Devon."
Our coach Ian Andrews added,”The Teifi Skiff is a great boat for juniors when they first start rowing." "The boat is smaller and lighter than our Celtic Longboats and also has two oars, so this is perfect for younger rowers as it avoids one side of a developing body becoming stronger than the other.” “ The Teifi skiff also has greater flexibility than a Longboat – which needs four rowers and a cox -as the skiff can be rowed with one cox and one rower or one cox and two rowers. It is also a
great coaching boat and with two oars will help rowers to learn to scull.”
Ron’s widow Sally, who is also our Secretary, said, “ Ron was a member of Aberdyfi
Rowing Club for six years and absolutely loved his time here. As Secretary I am still very involved with the club and I am very happy with the choice the club has made for Ron’s legacy, and I know he would be too."
" I am sure the skiff will get lots of use and I can’t wait to see the ‘Flying
Fish’ out on the water!”
