The swim out at sea is then 2.4 miles in total and is made up of 2 x 1.2 mile laps.

Following the swim there is a 112 mile bike ride around the island passing through many villages where the locals all come out to cheer the competitors on.

On returning to Puerto Del Carmen the bike is exchanged for running shoes and the competitors take on the final challenge of a 26 mile run. This run takes place along the shoreline in a 3 lap course.
The time allowed for completing the ironman is 17 hours so at midnight the competition ends.

" I first thought of doing the Lanzarote ironman about 3 years ago but kept putting it off because I thought my dodgy knee wouldn't take it."

"Then,  after watching the 2012 ironman on tv, I decided to give it a go so I signed up for it last July."

"I wanted to take part in the Lanzarote Challenge because it is supposed to be one of the hardest ones".

" I started my cycling and swimming training in Gran Canaria last October and my run/walking when I returned home."

"I enjoyed all the disciplines but probably enjoyed the swim most of all because it was the one I was most unsure of but gradually I just felt my confidence grow and grow."

"I felt a little nervous before the start but once I was into the event it was just a fantastic day and at the end I was so thrilled to have completed it that I didnt get much sleep."

"The next thing on the list is the Celtic Challenge and then perhaps the Lanzarote Ironman in 2015."

"I would like to thank Jacky, Beth Parry, Paul,  Kara & lon Chesworth  for being there to cheer me on and for all the many messages of support from everyone back home!"
