Helen and I went to the Cleddau race, Haverford West to Neyland near Milford Haven yesterday, April 8th
The Cleddau is a 16 mile river race which opens at its end into the Haven. There were 41 boats 39 longboats and 2 yoles mostly from South Wales, one from Aberystwyth and one from Aberaeron.
Mumbles had 5 boats and Newquay had 7!
The level of fitness was impressive indeed. The Mumbles men and women came first in both their categories.
They had been training all winter on ergos and you could tell!
We came first out of the yoles by 5 mins, and 3rd in the womens race. We were delighted to start first in this timed event, and we stayed in first position leading the entire pack of boats
for the duration of the race, to cross the line at Neyland in style!- triggering lots of able bodied men to come running from their beers to help pull our boat up the slipway!! haha!!
The race goes through some of the most beautiful Pembrokeshire countryside and the entire race is a delight to experience (ifyou have time to breathe that is).
Definitely a great race to test how fit and trained up you are - would have been ideal for the Aberdyfi Cork team to go and do as a taster and see what state the competition is in...maybe next time?
So we held our heads high, left the two men in the other yole (from Mumbles) for dust (6mins behind us) and represented our club adequately.
Looking forward to the next race already.
