Our club achieved a landmark success in
the Great River Race in London on Saturday, September 15th
Our mixed crew of Dylan Evans, Claire Lever, Libby
Oxtoby, Ed Moss with Cox Alice Hewitt and passenger Michael Wood not only won
the mixed Celtic longboat class but also were the first mixed crew of any
class to finish in a time of 2 hours 36 minutes and 59 seconds.
Once again Aberdyfi had great representation at the race with six crews – 4 mixed, 1 veteran
ladies and one veteran men’s - including coxes and passengers, travelling down
to London to take part in this major sporting event that attracts over 300 competitors - London's River Marathon- the 21 mile
London Great River Race.
Club captain Alun
Stedman said, “ Our club has achieved
great success again and we can be very proud of all our crews."
“ On Saturday the 21 mile race from Greenwich to
Richmond was held in glorious sunshine but the breeze and choppy
water made the first four miles very testing. With over 40 Celtic
longboats starting together the coxes have to be congratulated for ensuring a
safe passage for their crews, especially over this early part. The work of the
coxes was not made any easier for the last few miles either, as they had to
encourage tired bodies, -many of whom were suffering from blisters and cramp -
to maintain their effort right to the finish.”
"The fantastic achievement of our mixed crew was particulary satisfying as it was the first victory for the
skilled young rowers Alice, Ed,Libby and Claire. Each one has
a background in river rowing but they have all adapted very well to the fixed seat boats
of sea rowing .The win also means that Dylan has now won every possible catagory
that he could in this race and in addition it means that over the last 7 years
the club has won all categories possible in the men's, ladies and mixed
“ Our other teams also did extremely well ."
veteran crew of Jude Evans, Rhian Jones, Deb Wood, Sandy Andrews with Cox Ian
Andrews and passenger Callum Andrews were second ladies Vets overall and second
ladies Celtic to finish in a time of 2 hours 52 minutes and 28 seconds "
" Two of our Mixed crews finished very close together. Our mixed team of Beth Parry, Catrin Owen ,Tim Chesworth , Kerry Cruickshank, Paul Cruickshank with passenger Harry Cruickshank were second Celtic Mixed to finish and 3rd Overall Mixed crew to finish in a time of 2 hours, 40 minutes and 20 seconds."
"Our Mixed team of Kara Chesworth, Toni Francis, David Chapman, John Ward with cox Dominic West and passenger Owen were 3rd Celtic Mixed and 3rd Celtic Vets to finish in a time of 2 hours, 41 minutes and 9 seconds."
"Our veteran men’s crew
of Tom Jones, Dave Seabourne,Nigel Pearson and Alun Stedman with cox John Eddington and passenger Sian Brightman held the lead in their category up to two miles from the finish and crossed the line in a time of 2 hours, 39 minutes and 56 seconds and were 2nd Celtic Vets to finish." Our mixed crew of Paul Chesworth, Beth Graham, Ian Brown, Helen Chapman with cox Gabs Chesworth and passenger Ceri Graham also had a great race.
“Aberdyfi Rowing Club has sent
crews down to the Great River Race for many years now and it requires
great team support to ensure transport of boats and individuals to and from
London and from hotels between start and finish. In more sense than one success
comes from the whole team pulling together."
Great River Race is a long and tough race but it is a wonderful event for those taking
part and also for all the spectators cheering everyone on along the river. As a club we always enjoy the whole
experience and this is reflected in the number of crews wanting to take
