London Great River Race 2022
Two ARC crews take part in the London Great River Memorial Procession to honour Queen El;izabeth 11

After many weeks of training two crews from ARC - men - Mike, Guy, Ian, Colin, Tom and Kevin and ladies - Mary Isabel, Tracey, Gail, Vickie and Olivia travelled to London on Friday, September 9th to take part in The London Great River Race. This is an event that ARC has competed in many times before and has achieved brilliant results.

Following the sad death of Queen Elizabeth 11 on Thursday, September 8th, the event was changed to be a Memorial Procession with boats flylng black ribbons with their flags to honour our Queen.

Here is our chairman Mike's report of the day..

"The River Race was adjusted following the sad death of our Queen  However as many competitors , including ourselves, had already left on route with many from other parts of Europe, either already there or also en-route ,the organisers  had a very difficult decision to make.

," After much discussion it was decided that the event would continue ,but be replaced  in name by a ;MEMORIAL  PROCESSION .in memory of her Majesty`s passing.".

"ARC had entered  two Celtic boats made up of one men's  crew and one ladies crew with both having undertaken months of hard training under the guidance of our coach Ian Andrews." .

"Both teams did extremely well in difficult rowing conditions."

."The  men's crew completed the course in 2hours 30minutes with the ladies finishing in 2hours 48minutes -  very commendable times for the 21..6 mile row."

".The men`s crew were 6th overall & 2nd in the Celtic category - this being one minute after the first Celtic & 12 minutes ahead of the 3rd. The ladies (although still to be confirmed )we think were the first Celtic Ladies team to cross the finish line , so a tremendous performance by all." .

"All involved were extremely grateful to Ian Andrews for towing the boats down to London and for passing on his knowledge and experience -  which obviously paid off.".

"Both crews thoroughly enjoyed the event and were delighted with their performances /results on the day and also expressed a keen interest in participating in next years event in 2023"
